Just after Tax Day in 1997, Robert LeMay (aka Bob), our principal, started LeMay & Company. You may have known that from our website, but do you know how we got our start? Learn more about our beginnings and where we’re going.
Starting and Growth
In February 1996, Robert received his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and finished out the next tax season working for another CPA firm. Owning his own business was something he always wanted and, in the spring of 1997, he took the leap and started his own practice to focus on both individuals and small businesses and their tax needs. For the first two-plus years of his business, he balanced being a stay-at-home dad and running his business – taking advantage of working during naptimes in his townhouse basement office growing his client base. His first employee was Marilyn McGonegle; Marilyn joined him in the basement office in 1999 although it was getting very crowded at this point. They eventually outgrew the basement office and moved into an office building that was located where the Sheehy Volkswagen of Springfield is currently.
The business worked and grew for a couple of years out of that first office building. But as his office staff expanded and owners of the building made plans to tear it down to replace it with the car dealership, it was time to move. In 2001 he moved to the current building off Backlick Road; however, once again he was in a basement office. His staff expanded to include another licensed accountant to help serve his continually expanding client base. The staff size continued to grow to match the number of clients and Bob once again moved the company in 2008. This time it was just a move within the building – up to the third floor into our current office space.
Looking Ahead
Over the last 25 years, LeMay and Company has grown and expanded – to the point that we are moving again in May of 2022 to a new office space. We continue to focus on the small business owner and their unique needs and challenges. As in the past, our staff has grown to best serve our clients – adding members recently during the 2022 tax season. Bob and the rest of the staff enjoy helping others grow their businesses as he has with his own.
