Certified Public Accountants (CPA) do more than just prepare and file tax returns for their clients – we’ve covered the importance of having a CPA and why you may need one in a previous blog. If you’re looking for a CPA for your personal needs or business, it may be tempting to just pick the first one that comes up on an internet search. But not all CPAs are going to be a perfect match for what you need. Some specialize in non-profits or large businesses; others focus on small businesses or even just the personal financial needs of families and individuals. Hopefully after reading this blog, you’ll be better equipped to find a CPA that meets what you’re looking for.
What is a CPA?
A Certified Public Accountant – or CPA – is an accounting practitioner who has completed educational requirements per state rules, passed the CPA Exam, and pursues continuing education courses on the updates and changes to regulations and laws surrounding accounting and IRS changes. The IRS maintains a database of tax preparers – those that have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) – this includes CPAs and non-CPAs that charge you to prepare and file your tax returns. Not all tax preparers are CPAs; nearly anyone can apply for a PTIN and charge you to assist with your returns. CPAs have additional experience and education to save you time, and potentially money in the long run. They are also qualified to assist you in more ways than just during tax season. They can assist with auditing and review services, financial planning, tax consulting, and be a resource if you do face IRS penalties or audits. CPAs are a wealth of information and often provide more knowledge than you could get from just a tax preparer other types of tax preparers.
Finding a CPA That Matches Your Needs
Deciding on the right CPA for you is a personal choice – but consider some of these factors: Are they accessible? Are they affordable (within your budget)? Are they affable – do you get along with them and their communication style? Do they offer the service/services you’re looking for? Look around and ask questions to find the one(s) you think will work. Talk to colleagues and others in the business world you have connections with – find out who they work with and trust. Look at resources from networking groups and businesses to build a list of potential CPAs that could be what you’re looking for. Keep in mind the CPA that your fellow business owner raves about may not be the right fit for you and your business. Take time to determine what your specific needs are and how much you can afford for services. Then start talking with each potential CPA!
Interview Your Options
After you’ve narrowed it down to a CPA you think will mesh well with you and the needs of your business don’t just jump into a working relationship right away. Arrange a meeting – be it in person or over the phone – to discuss your situation and “interview” the CPA with some questions. Some questions to consider asking:
- What licenses/ designations do you have?
- How long have you been a CPA?
- What tax issues do you specialize in?
- Do you outsource any of your work or does it all stay in-house?
- What are your fees/rates?
- What is your privacy policy?
- What do you expect from your clients?
- How long is your oldest client relationship?
Read reviews from other clients and speak with fellow business owners to learn what they look for in CPAs. Compare feedback and reviews and make the best educated decision you can for your business. Even once you’ve settled on a CPA, you don’t have to stay with their firm – you can change CPAs down the road.
